Day 14 of WHSA's 20-Day Comment Challenge: where families would go instead

Day 14 of the 20-Day Public Comment Challenge: Where families would go instead.

Today’s Prompt:

If your program shortened its year, raised class sizes, or closed, where would you go instead? Give the distance, the cost, and the waiting list if you know them. Numbers land harder than impressions here.

Day 14 Prompts for the Action Alert

Staff: “Families at [program] who need alternatives look at [local options and their limits].”

Parent: “The nearest early childhood program to [town] is [name, or “one I do not know of”], [number] miles away. It costs [amount] per [week or month], with a waiting list of [length]. If [program] changed, my family would [what you would actually do].”

Community Partner: “As [title] at [organization], we hear from families who could not get into Head Start about what their other options cost and how far away they are. [Describe.]”

Where it says that: The rule’s central claim is that more flexibility produces more access. Docket ACF-2026-0595.

This is one of 20 daily prompts. You don’t have to wait, browse them all and submit on any prompt that fits your situation, anytime between now and October 6. See the rest on the 20-Day Comment Challenge page.

Wondering how public comments help? Watch a 3-minute explainer

This short video walks through what the proposal would change, why it matters, and exactly how to submit a comment, even if you’ve never done this before.

How to leave an impactful comment

You don’t need to be a policy expert to submit a strong comment, and you don’t need to cover every issue in the proposal. In fact, a comment that focuses on one thing is often more powerful than one that tries to address everything.

  1. Focus on one area of the proposal you feel most passionate about.
  2. Add a short, real story about how that change would affect you, your child, or your classroom.
  3. Submit it before October 6, 2026.
