Parent and Family Stories

Launched in January 2011, Parent and Family Stories is a feature of the Office of Head Start’s Early Childhood Learning & Knowledge Center (ECLKC) that provides a forum for Head Start and Early Head Start parents and families to hear from others or share their own Head Start stories.  Parent and Family Stories assists staff, parents, policymakers, advocates, practitioners, and the early childhood community to have a better understanding of the contributions that parents and families make in the lives of their young children and an understanding of how Head Start programs work with caregivers to support healthy family and child development.  On the site, dads, moms, grandparents, and parents of children with special needs are all put in the spotlight so you can hear from them in their own words.  There is also an opportunity for you to share your Head Start story so you may inspire others.

Our Head Start

Our Head Start is a project of the First Five Year’s Fund to share the stories of the hundreds of thousands of adults whose success in life started with Head Start–today’s entrepreneurs, doctors, authors, military officers, graduate students, and pillars of their families and communities.  At Our Head Start, you’ll find stories and videos from successful Head Start graduates from all over the country.  If you’re a Head Start alum, we encourage you to share your own story at Our Head Start so others can hear about the importance of Head Start in your life.  You can also learn how Head Start helps build a better America.  Be sure to check out the story from Wisconsin’s own Lilly Irvin-Vitela, Executive Director of the Supporting Families Together Association (SFTA), to learn how Head Start contributed to her success.

WHSA’s Head Start through Our Eyes

WHSA and its WHSA Parent Affiliate would like your help to collect individual and family experiences of Head Start & Early Head Start in our state.  We’d like to include your stories on the WHSA website or in WHSA materials to help inform prospective parents about Wisconsin Head Start and let the public and policymakers know why Head Start is important for our state’s children, families, and communities.  If you would like to share your Head Start experience please visit the Head Start through Our Eyes page to submit your unique impact statement.  We’ll want to learn:

  • Who you are, where you’re from, and to which Wisconsin Head Start/Early Head Start program you’re connected.
  • What Head Start means to you.  Why is Head Start important to you and your family?
  • What you do, or will, remember most about Head Start.  What are the memories you most cherish?
  • How Head Start has had a positive effect on your child or family.

We look forward to hearing your Head Start story!
