The Center for Law and Social Policy (CLASP) released fact sheets for Head Start and Early Head Start programs for the 2008-09 program year based on programs’ annual Program Information Report (PIR) data. The fact sheets provide snapshots of the characteristics of enrolled children and the services provided to enrolled children and their families.
In the 2008-09 program year, Head Start served more than 900,000 preschool-aged children nationwide. This is about 11,000 fewer children than were served in the 2007-08 program year. Early Head Start served more than 83,000 children under age 3 and about 9,600 pregnant women; about 1,500 fewer infants and toddlers and about 500 fewer pregnant women than were served in 2007-08. Eight percent of all funded Head Start slots were in Early Head Start. Nationally, less than half of eligible children were served by Head Start preschool services, while 3 percent of eligible infants, toddlers, or pregnant women were served by Early Head Start.
