2017 Parent & Staff Scholarship Opportunities

How do I apply?

Applications must include Head Start/Early Head Start Program Director’s signature to be considered complete. All completed applications must be received at the WHSA office or emailed no later than Thursday, April 10, 2017.

Parents

Who is eligible?

  • Any current Early Head Start or Head Start parent or guardian (a person legally responsible for a child) who is enrolled in or planning on attending an accredited education institution or job training center. Proof of enrollment is required to receive a scholarship.
  • Applicants may not be previous POP Scholarship (or any WHSA Scholarship) recipient.
  • Current HS/EHS staff are not eligible for a POP Scholarship. If you are a current staff member we encourage you to apply for one of the WHSA Staff Affiliate Scholarships.

Amount of scholarship

The scholarship award is $300. The award can be used for course fees, books, childcare, and/or transportation. One scholarship each will be awarded to two individuals.

Eligibility and selection of award recipients

The Wisconsin Head Start (WHSA) Parent Affiliate will determine the eligibility of each applicant and select two candidates to receive the scholarships. Committee members who are related to an applicant, or have a “relationship of significance” with an applicant, will exclude themselves from the review/selection process.

Criteria used for selection

Criteria used for selection includes the applicants’ personal and professional achievements, Head Start and community involvement, need (financial, extenuating circumstances, etc.), and educational and career goals.

John Erickson Memorial Scholarship

The John Erickson Memorial Scholarship was created to honor John Erickson who served as Director of the Parent Child Center (PCC) and Head Start program of West Cap, Inc. for twenty-one years. Committed to the involvement of parents and supporting staff, John dedicated his life to Head Start. Instrumental in the inception of the Wisconsin Head Start Director’s Association in early 1970, John served as Chairperson in 1977.

Who is Elegible?

The John Erickson Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a current Head Start employee, employed by Head Start for at least one year.

Amount of Scholarship: The scholarship award is $300. The award can be requested for course fees and books.

Corrine “Corky” Mikus Memorial Scholarship

The WHSA Staff Affiliate established the Corrine “Corky” Mikus Memorial Scholarship in 1985 in memory of her work as a Head Start employee for the Kenosha Public School’s Head Start program prior to her death in 1984.

 

Who is Elegible?

The Corinne “Corky” Mikus Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a current Head Start employee who is a past/current Head Start parent, employed by Head Start for at least one year.

Amount of Scholarship: The scholarship award is $300. The award can be requested for course fees, books, child care and/or transportation.

Joyce E. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship

The Joyce E. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of Joyce who was a former Director at the UW Oshkosh Head Start program prior to her death in 1994. The scholarship began as a generous donation of Joyce’s siblings and daughters who wanted to honor their mother and help someone who is struggling to balance work and family. Currently funded through the WHSA Staff Affiliate Scholarship Raffle.

Who is eligible? The Joyce E. Wilcox Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a current Head Start employee who is a past/current Head Start parent, who could use help in pursuing education, and employed by Head Start for at least one year.

Amount of Scholarship: The scholarship award is $300. The award can be requested for course fees, books, child care and/or transportation.

Staff Affiliate Scholarship

The Staff Affiliate Scholarship is an annual scholarship made available from funds raised throughout the year by the WHSA Staff Affiliate members. The Staff Affiliate would also like to give special recognition to Lakeshore Learning Materials for their generous donation during the WHSA Annual Conference. Their generosity and support of this scholarship fund-raising raffle continues to help make this scholarship possible.

Who is eligible?

The Staff Affiliate Scholarship will be awarded to a current Head Start employee, employed by Head Start for at least one year. Special consideration will be given to those applicants who are obtaining an advanced degree (Advanced Degree is anything above an Associates) or recertification.

Amount of Scholarship: The scholarship award is $300. The award can be requested for advanced education, recertification and related expenses.
