Data in Head Start and Early Head Start: Creating a Culture that Embraces Data – Wendy Bowe, Early Childhood Education Specialist/Center Manager and Lillian Mallinson, Grantee Specialist STG International, Inc.
This session will provide you with hands on, interactive opportunities to learn about how to utilize program level data in meaningful ways. We will utilize an interactive learning module designed by the National Center for Program Design and Management for use by management staff in Head Start and Early Head Start programs.
The goals of this interactive session are to strengthen leaders’ capabilities to:
- Understand how the data collected in your Head Start or Early Head Start program fit into the annual planning cycle
- Help everyone in the program–from bus drivers and cooks to the Policy Council and governing body members–become enthusiastic about using data
- Become data detectives and base decisions on facts rather than hunches
- Share data appropriately with different audiences and show how each audience can use the information
- Celebrate the good news that data shows and learn from the bad news so you can improve your program
Following our exploration of program level data, we will dive deep into CLASS data. Please bring along your agency’s current aggregate CLASS scores. Each program will examine their data for trends and patterns and network with programs showing similar needs. Small groups will engage in determining the best approach to professional development for classroom staff using the National Center on Quality Teaching and Learning Inservice Suites. You will have hands on opportunities to develop a training approach to best meet your program’s needs. We also have a surprise for you. We will introduce the CLASS Score Calculator, an easy way to capture program level CLASS data, create charts and compare to national and regional scores.

Fair is Fair: Prioritizing Self-Care – Lilly Irvin-Vitela
Have you ever felt pulled in too many directions? Have you thought that others were on your last nerve? Have you thought, this is SO HARD, it’s just NOT FAIR? Have you had moments with your children, co-workers, or adult family members when you wished you could hit the re-wind button and have a situation go differently? If you answered yes, come to this session and explore no and low cost strategies for managing stress and getting your social emotional needs met. The session format will include a small piece of lecture and resource sharing and facilitated large and small group discussions using café style discussion and talking circles. If you understand that caring for yourself positions you to do an even better job of caring for children, then this session is for you!
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how many adults are experiencing stressors and challenges to mental health
- Identify common stress triggers in adults
- Explain how Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACEs, can be playing a role in the social emotional well-being of parents and teachers
- Explore protective factors to reduce stress and strategies for managing stress
- Discuss informal and formal supports to meet social emotional needs and improve social-emotional well-being
